Foxy Feet

This adaptable children's game requires some simple items that are easy to find and assemble. These can be arranged and re-arranged in multiple ways to play this game that uses the whole body, integrating body and brain functions. Whole body learning is the best way that children learn so go ahead, use, experiment further and enjoy Foxy Feet with your groups of children, either at home on a rainy day or in school playgrounds.

What you need:

at least 9 non-slip durable mats; koki pens to write numbers 1-9

option: glue 2 mats together to make them firmer; one side is all the same color, the reverse side can be different colors.

option: draw shark fins on the reverse side (they gobble you                              up if you step on them, adding to the drama of the game!)

use a drum, tambourine or guitar but most of all your voice to sing-song
 the chant throughout the game

Facilitating the game:

#    lay the number mats out in 3 rows of 3, numbers facing down, as per photos above

#    begin singing  it's a fox- a fox - a foxy feet so the children practice stepping their feet in time to the chant.  This requires agility and motor planning before they even step on the number mats.

#   turn over 4 or 5 mats in order, adding your own dramatic touch, saying the numbers in sequence as you point at them; depending on age, start with simplest sequence eg  1    2    3  4  5

you may want to only use 4 numbers

 #   always start simple, progressing to mixed number sequences

#  invite the children to line up, then start singing the first line of the chant "foxy feet will find the beat with a  1    2    3  4 5"    You can either point at these numbers while singing, and then demonstrate by stepping on the numbered mats in time with the rhyme.  Show the children how they can step any way they want between the mats: they may need to twist or turn around, or put 2 feet on one mat. Arrange the numbers initially so they are easy to process; always progress from simplest to more complex. This is the best way to learn and master a new activity.

simple demo of song from intro - middle- ending

Intro:    it's a fox-    a fox-    a foxy- feet   ( repeat as necessary until ready to go)

 Chords     E7      A7                E7               A7

Foxy feet will find the beat

                        E7     A7          E7       A7

             with a 7         3  2   4

Keep the beat with your foxy feet

            with a 7        3  2   4

        It’s a fox-  a fox  -  a foxy  feet

            with a 7     5      3  2   4

We make a dance and we keep the beat

            with a 7     5      3  2   4    etc

Laying out the numbers

It's best done without a backing track so that you can slow down the tempo when necessary to match the feet to the numbers.

A rough sung version of the song

# to change the number sequence during the game, prime the children to listen out for
Foxy feet will CHANGE the beat to a  ...........
This cues them with a new number sequence, changing the foot patterns.

#    variations: substitute simple everyday objects, letters or colors instead of numbers

lay mats out in random patterns

OR lay the mats out randomly instead of in the block,

to make more interesting dance moves.

# end the game by singing the intro again, but this time slow it down gradually (called ritardando in music) and become gradually softer until you just STOP! This is the practice of musical dynamics.

Benefits and spin-offs:

Apart from it being a feel-good, fun, inclusive game, it also contributes to healthy development and learning in children in the following ways:

uses musical elements to foster whole body co-ordination and integration

body memory, sequential memory skills, midline crossing

    balance, agility and dexterity

uses rhythm to foster motor planning, praxia and body mapping

    listening, reading + memory skills

    spatial-perceptual skills

    learning by practice and repetition

creativity as they get to 'make up a dance'

The simple musical elements of rhythmic patterns and repetitive chanting help the development of learning skills while having fun. Foxy Feet helps children to be grounded, to think on their feet, to find their feet, to put their best foot first!

Spotted bush snake

This is an old song  recorded in the early 2000s. Its message remains unchanged: respect and protect wild creatures, especially those that are maligned because of our own ignorance and fear. Snakes, when properly handled, take their place in the greater ecosystem and should not be killed indiscriminately.

This is a useful song to foster animal treatment awareness and other environmental issues with children. The very pretty bush snake in question chose to live under flower pot for a while, becoming quite charmingly tame and relaxed in the presence of humans.

Sing a song of seasons

Here's a song, by special request from Flossy's preschool here in Makhanda/ Grahamstown/ South Africa, for the changing of the seasons; I've taken it further to include the changing of so much of our lives as we are all touched by the Covid pandemic. We miss our singing and dancing together - it's not quite the same copying off a screen!

Sing a song of seasons    autumn's blowing in         whoosh!

Trees are shedding leaves and blowing in the wind       vrrrrr!

Days are getting shorter    the sun a little low               brrrr!

and if the clouds begin to grow you never know it might just snow

Sing a song of seasons      I'm missing all my friends          Hello!

Can't wait to play with you again as soon as lockdown ends      Yes!

The days are getting shorter    the sun a little low            brrrrrr!

Before we finish up this song we'll find that covid's moved along

Lockdown

                 *from STONES HILL SONGS*

Here's a song as we go into lockdown here in South Africa, at midnight on March 26, an unprecedented, drastic measure to stem the overwhelming tide of the Covid-19 virus.

"Lockdown" has a ring of rough horseplay to it; so in the dance the children stand with feet fairly wide apart to brace for whatever is coming. A wide base gives us a sense of dynamic strength. Use fists to further convey this. There is also a point where we balance (a posture called 'cat stance'); certainly any  shifting balance practice will build resilience, a highly desirable trait in unstable times.

The song makes use of the typical Covid greeting - using the elbow, or crossing the arms across the chest rather than shaking hands or hugging (as South Africans love to do). It reminds us of to wash our hands - apparently the simplest and most important preventative measure - and we practice sneezing into our crooked elbow to prevent spreading our germs.

As with all the songs on this site, it is plainly and clearly recorded for easy copy-learning. Add guitar, drums, shakers if you like, or just dance-and-sing it unaccompanied. To put singing AND dancing together involves many highly complex cortical functions, so do this activity with your children while you're cooped up at home in lockdown

I dedicate this song to the children at St Mary's Development Centre in Grahamstown - the best and most enthusiastic singer-dancers I know - and to the younger lively group at Flossy's pre-school. We'll meet again on the other side of this tidal wave when it's washed through, and sing and dance together some more!

Jumping In The Waves

                           *from STONES HILL SONGS*

This simple action-echo song takes lots of energy, but once going follows its own natural flow, like the waves in the sea.

Combining the singing voice with rhythmical body movement is a natural but powerful sensory integrative activity. Some children may be more comfortable with the singing, others with the movement. Try singing it without the movement - challenging! We are designed to move.

Also try doing the song in sequence without singing - this develops auditory memory as the lines ring in the head.

While having fun, you are helping develop:  bodymind literacy; spatial awareness; bilateral motor integration; motor planning; sequential memory and muscle tone. The movement feeds into the speech and language loop, and the singing feeds back into the movement. How marvellously we are designed!

You will get fit teaching your classes this way; be quite comfortable with the moves yourself as the children are born to copy you. Practice on your own first so that you can demonstrate with confidence. Learn each line with its accompanying move, and look for a quality of flow in the moves, suggesting waves.

The moves are partly drawn from a type of dance known as NIA dance (Neuro-muscular Integrative Activity).

End with a decrescendo (musical term meaning gradually softer), and simultaneously let the moves get smaller, fading away.

Follow the sequence, each time adding a new line and returning to the first. You can sing each line more than once - play with the practice of repetition!

I'm jumping in the waves  (always return to this one)
Hold the nose and go under
Take a tumble, take a tumble
  Balance up on a board
  Surf a wave into shore
Watch the waves rolling in,  the waves rolling out
Ssshhh!   ( sound of waves to end, gradually softer)

Sand sand everywhere

                     *from STONES HILL SONGS*

This easy-to-learn song takes us to the beach, a favourite trip for many children as it offers up a palette of rich, playful sensory experiences. Using traditional echo-style singing, the teacher leads line by line, to be copied by the children.

Each line has an accompanying move, a 'bodymind' move which develops sensory awareness. Singing it twice through gives more time to settle into the move. Find a comfortable flow, using a gentle pace. The moves are designed to be deeply integrating, involving both cerebral hemispheres, crossing the midline and using both sides of the body.

Have fun with the statue building: make up your own ideas, as many as you want; pick children to demonstrate a statue for all to copy; play with the voice, alternating between song and speech. Keep the last bit deliberately slow with clear moves as some children will fall out their trees to jump in crazily and knock it flat!

          Sand sand everywhere
Gonna build my castle over her
I'll shape like this and shape like that
I'll use my hands to pat it flat
Mmmm...stand back take a look at that
I'll jump right in and knock it flat!

Walking-Stopping

                    *from STONES HILL SONGS*

We have all heard about IQ and EQ; well, this song is about developing SQ - sensory intelligence. I also call it BODYMIND awareness - the ability to read the body with accuracy and discernment.

So while the children are enjoying this simple, fun song, they will be developing essential BODYMIND skills in coordination, spatial awareness, bilateral integration, laterality, balance, praxia (motor planning), language and more. Action songs accomplish so much, so easily in young children!

NB: BEFORE commencing, demonstrate HOW to walk randomly in a group without bumping or knocking anyone; be clear about this as it's important that children learn how to move amongst each other without treading on toes. It's like driving a car: watch where you're going.  Establish your own class behaviour rules.

Set the pace and hold the tempo; start moderate, but with each walking verse it's fun to vary the tempo - a little quicker, a little slower. Adapt.

Make a big deal about the STOP! A dramatic pause is effective. This is a good moment to take a slow look around and practice leisurely observation or add a couple of moves. Use a slightly 'ad lib' style here. Add your own further ideas:

make it big   --   make it small
make it high ---   make it low
yawn and stretch!  OR  shake a shoulder     OR shake an elbow

Perhaps you can build up a sequence of moves between the walking verse, adding on a new one each time. Up to you!

I do this one unaccompanied with a class; they learn to read and copy my body and voice, being great imitators at this age.

We are walking   x3    then we STOP!   Turn around ......take a look
We are marching  x3...then se STOP!    Balance up.........take a look
On our tiptoes  x3......then we STOP!   Make it big........make it small
                      etc
This is the rough sketch of the song; add to it as you feel inclined.
